Stoofpeertjes (Dutch Stewed Pears)

Stoofpeertjes : Two pieces of pear with a scoop of ice cream and a sprinkle of granola on a dessert plate surrounded by a ring of granola trail

Fruity and lightly spiced stewed pears in Glühwein delivers comforting notes and warmth for a pear-fect cozy treat this winter.

This recipe comes from my late Oma (Dutch for grandmother). I’m connected to her through my marriage. She was my husband’s maternal grandmother. Every Christmas, my mother-in-law makes Stoofpeertjes as a side dish for our Christmas dinner, much like how cranberry sauce is a staple in many holiday meals. We always enjoy reminiscing about Oma and her amusing Stoofpeertjes story.

As the story goes, when Oma was younger, she always made Stoofpeertjes from scratch, and everyone loved them. But as she got older, she started buying them from a local supplier. Yet, if anyone asked, she would always insist that she had made them herself. One day, my mother-in-law discovered the store-bought jar and asked Oma about it. That’s when she finally confessed that she had been buying Stoofpeertjes for quite some time! Even the local supplier knew about it because Oma had shared the story with her. Now, every time I make or think about Stoofpeertjes, I can’t help but remember Oma with a smile.

The Stoofpeertjes recipe I’ve created is slightly different from Oma and my mother-in-law’s version, as it uses Glühwein instead of regular red wine—but rest assured, it’s just as delicious. Stoofpeertjes is also a wonderfully versatile dish; it can be enjoyed as a starter, a side dish, or even a dessert. For this recipe, I’ve prepared it as a dessert. Of course, you don’t have to wait until Christmas to make this because it’s pear-fect for any occasion or simply as a treat on a cozy day!

See what I did there? Perfect… pear-fect… because, you know, pears? No? Tough crowd. Guess I’ll stick to cooking.

Ingredients

  • 550 ml Glühwein
  • 400 ml Water
  • 4 Pears peeled, halved and cored-see notes
  • 1 stick Cinnamon

Instructions

  • Add pears, glühwein, water and cinnamon stick to a pot. Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring it to a boil, stirring occasionally to prevent anything from sticking to the bottom
  • Once the mixture reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 3 hours, or until the pears are soft. Stir occasionally for even cooking.
  • To check if the pears are ready, poke them with a fork. If the flesh feels really soft, they are done. If they are still firm, continue simmering for another 30 minutes.
  • Before serving, let the pears cool for about 30 minutes.
  • Serve them as is, or alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream, generous garnish of granola, and pouring some of the stoofpeertjes liquid on top.

Notes

SUBSTITUTIONS
Pears
If you are not living in the Netherlands, it can be slightly difficult to find the Gieser-Wildeman pears. Hence, the next best option would be Bosc a.k.a Kaiser pears.
Wine
If you do not wish to use the Gluhwein for this recipe, then you can substitute the Glühwein with Cabernet Sauvignon and add 100 grams of fine white sugar/castor sugar as well.

STORAGE
Once cooled, store the pears in their liquid in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. The longer they sit in the liquid the more flavour they absorb.
